A Passion for Dentistry
Following the lead of our founder, Michael J. O’Brien, we continue to demonstrate our passion for dentistry, through the pursuit of advancing technology and through involvement in the larger dental community.
At the Forefront in Technology
It takes a keen eye to spot the possibilities. Some are found in our own backyard, others come from countries around the world. Many technologies have been adapted from other industries and applied in new ways to dentistry over the years. Following are examples of our leadership in bringing new ideas to fruition in our own laboratory.
In the early 1990’s, CAD/CAM technology looked promising as a crossover into the dental industry. We began working with a number of manufacturers, serving as a beta test site for CAD/CAM systems that were under development. In 1997, months before its nationwide launch, we became one of the ten original labs to offer Procera® restorations to our customers. They were scanned and milled with a CAD/CAM system developed by Nobel Biocare.
Two years before Dentsply began marketing Cristobal+® and making it a recognized leader in composite restorations, O’Brien Dental Lab’s customers were enjoying the option of prescribing Cristobal+ for their patients.
For several years, as the digital photography boom began to build, we participated in the research and development of digital photography for purposes of shade taking and automated digital color mapping. Combining the best software and our own photo techniques, our proprietary Digi-Color program was born in 2001.
As a joint venture, we created custom lab management software, which is now being utilized throughout the U.S. It allows us to schedule, track, invoice and archive all the work within our laboratory
As far back as 1998, zirconia became a material of interest, especially in light of the blossoming interest in cosmetic dentistry. O’Brien began manufacturing zirconia crowns and testing zirconia cores for a variety of companies. In 2003, we were one of the first three labs in the U.S to purchase a 3M ESPE Lava™ system for use in our Z Core® program. This new system brought the entire process of CAD/CAM scanning, milling and finishing in-house at our location.
Most recently, O’Brien Dental Lab was awarded a patent for a project that has been in development since 1999. The process utilizes rapid prototyping equipment in conjunction with scanned data to fabricate crowns, bridges and copings in a wax-like material. O’Brien will now be moving forward to fully commercially develop the system for use in dental laboratories.
Community Involvement, Continuing Education and Student Support
We’re known for the breadth of services we provide for individual dental practices, but not everyone knows the extent of our involvement with the larger dental community. From study clubs and dental societies, to continuing education and student organizations, we support the dental community in many ways.
When it comes to study clubs, we believe that there is no better way to promote Successful Dentistry® than being directly involved in the learning process. That’s why we participate in many study clubs around the region. In the study club setting, we provide the lab work as well as the laboratory point-of-view. Doctors and lab technicians have the opportunity to develop good communication, while sharing the learning experience. Many instructors insist that their courses could not be possible without the participation of the laboratory. Successful Dentistry is, after all, a team effort. The study clubs we are currently involved with range from gold and occlusion, to removables and esthetic dentistry.
Examples of O’Brien Dental Lab’s support of the dental community can be found in dental societies throughout the Northwest. We provide speakers, presentations, funding and materials for many associations. Because we are recognized by the Academy of General Dentistry, we also offer our own accredited continuing education programs.
O’Brien Dental Lab is also proud to be an avid supporter of the Oregon Health Sciences University and its dental students. For over 25 years we have provided educational programs on the campus, organized student lab days and opened our doors for tours of our Corvallis facility. By offering courses on the newest techniques and materials, and exposing students to a state-of-the-art laboratory, we give new doctors the opportunity for an additional perspective on the possibilities for excellence in modern dentistry.
